Celebrating the life of

John D. Bragg

Passed away on August 30, 2023

John D. Bragg

John Donovan Bragg, 71, passed away Wednesday, August 30th, 2023, at his home on Wilmington Island. John was a native of Tybee Island and spent most of his life at his home on Horsepen Creek. John was a 1969 graduate from Jenkins High School. He later graduated from Georgia Southern University with a B.A. in History in 1976. John spent 25 years as an educator for SCCPSS and dedicated much of his career teaching at-risk youth. During this time, he also achieved his Master Captain 100 ton certificate and operated charters in his retirement. John was a lifelong Waterman and spent most of his free time on a boat in the coastal waters around Tybee.

He was an avid fisherman, shrimper, and crabber and gained some notoriety for his sometimes-unorthodox approaches. John never met a stranger and often would make friends anywhere he went. John lived for adventure with his family and often took his wife and children to the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and as far as Sydney, Australia. In addition, he was an adopted and honorary member of the Fakawe Tribe and West Afrikan.

He was a loving father, uncle, and grandfather. His mother Marguerite Teeple Barbour Bragg, father, John Bragg, and brother David Bragg preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Wendy Pierce Bragg, sister Catherine Fulp, sons Donovan Pierce Bragg, Robert Matthew Cail, Tyler Donovan Bragg, Brian Spencer Cail, daughter Lindsay Bragg Weishaar, son-in-law Doug, daughters-in-law Danyse and Lauren, and seven grandchildren.

John was a good one. We were neighbors on Horse Pen Creek in the mid 90's. Every time he would ride by in his red Jeep, if I was out on my dock, we would holler at each other "I love you man". (From the Bud Light TV ad.) And every time I would try to get past his dock in my boat on the way to the Back River, I was assured of a drenching from his hose. My friends thought he was a nut. He was. John, I love you man.

- Matt Powers, Wilmington Island, GA, Georgia

Wendy, I am so very sadden to learn of the loss of John. John was a unique character who cruised at his own pace. He was the chief of the SCJ Village when it came on campus. He brought a little of the TyB paradise to his unit at the Village. His banana trees could be seen swaying in the breezes from the windows. His humor/laughter will be missed as he sure knew who to brighten one's day. I am happy to have known him. My sincere thoughts are with your family. Hugs to you.

Hands down my most favorite CO worker at Johnson. We would go check the perimeter during planning together after he hit a few golf balls out into the football field. We would fish at Bonaventure and go see boats at the marinas around the area. He was one of my most favorite humans ever!

- Koren Tonkin, Savannah , Ga

Dear Wendy and family, I am truly saddened to hear of John’s passing. I’ll always fondly think back on the many days we fished the Back River and the many surrounding creeks. They were fun days. On occasion, John would share some of his life’s stories with me and I’ll tell you… I laughed far more than I fished. We always had a fine time fishing! John sure knew how to get the most out of the simplest moments in life. I really liked John and I for one will miss him. Please know that all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.
